Rebekah's tale begins in Madrid in the 17th century where she lived with her father, a great merchant and banker. She is loved and admired by all Madrid, not only for her beauty but also for her tireless acts of charity, feeding thousands of Madrid's hungry in public comidas. Her admirers include Tomas, a giant gypsy, and Diego, an enamored, young nobleman who discovers Rebekah's family's secret -- they are Marranos (secret Jews).

Duty bound, Diego betrays Rebekah and her father. When the Inquisitor General captures them, he too is struck by her beauty and offers her a lifetime of pomp and splendor as his concubine. Rebekah accepts -- contingent on her father's release -- but in the end she is betrayed and tortured in the Inquisitor General's dungeons. On June 30, 1680, Rebekah, the noblest of Jews, is burned at the stake in an auto de fe.

Sixty years after the great auto came the death of El Deslengua, the Tongueless One -- a wizened old Spaniard who lived mysteriously and silently in a French village for more than twenty-five years. He left voluminous writings that disclose his role in Rebekah's tale.

A contemporary, Madame d'Aulnoy, described the final hours of Rebekah, noting that she was a "of marvelous beauty, seemingly not yet seventeen years old."
