In today's world, a fast-paced era of culture, enlightenment, and technology, there would seem to be little purpose in reading the Haftara. Are ancient archaic words written thousands of years ago relevant to our day and age?

In an age of democracy where leaders are followers, true guidance is hard to come by. Opinions abound, but what is the absolute path of truth?

The answers are in the words of the prophets. Their divinely inspired teachings exhort us to adhere to the Torah. They guide us and inform us of what is right…and what is wrong. Chazal tell us that while over 1,200,000 prophets existed, only those prophecies that were needed for future generations were recorded. These words speak to us, in our time, and are applicable to every Jew within his or her unique circumstances.

The Haftara Handbook gives us a weekly insight into the holy words of the prophets. Compiled from classical and contemporary sources, each essay contains a summary of that day’s Haftara, followed by the connections to the Parsha or the Yom Tov, and then explores profound messages pertinent to our lives.

Open it up, and let the prophets speak to you.

About the author:

Born in London in 1976, Jonathan Shooter graduated high school, spent two years learning in Yeshiva, and then obtained an economics degree from the London School of Economics. Since graduation, he has been studying in the Kollel of Yeshivas Midrash Shmuel under the guidance of Harav Binyomin Moskovits. During this time, he obtained semicha from Rav Moskovits and, in addition to learning, he teaches in the Midreshes Shmuel Seminary and gives many shiurim on his trips abroad. The Haftara Handbook is the author’s fifth book, having written on the Parsha and the festivals. Residing in Eretz Yisrael, Jonathan is married with six children.

Praise for The Haftara Handbook:

"...his writings are in accord with Hashkafas HaTorah, full of the many Yesodos of Yiddishkeit that are essential throughout our lives as Torah Jews. His writings give us a deeper understanding into the meaning of the words of the prophets and how they lead us to Yiras Shomayim. This sefer will greatly benefit the English-speaking public...."
-Rabbi Levi Yitzchak Horowitz, zt”l, The Bostoner Rebbe – Beit Pinchas

"...the author has gathered from the ideas of the Haftaras many important yedios, beautiful explanations, good and correct lessons, deos and hashkafos which will bring great benefit to those who learn his words."
-Rav Yaakov Hillel

"...their content is words of hashkafa and chizuk which became clarified from study and delving into the words of the Prophets through Chazal…and he has arranged them in an appealing, intelligent and orderly way."
-Rav Chaim Pinchos Sheinberg
