The study of Tanakh has always been a staple of Jewish life. The new
windows which have opened up in the last century into the rooms of
academia – anthropology, archeology, philology and literary analysis, to
name a few – have given new perspectives to traditional study and have
allowed Orthodox students of our Book of Books to understand, with
greater depth and insight, the stories, laws, prophecies and poems that
have been our breath for these millennia. In this rich volume, Rabbi
Etshalom demonstrates the methodology through which traditional
study meets academic rigor, and new insights into the meaning of the
text and its import come to light. (“The old will become renewed and
the new will become sanctified.” –Rabbi Abraham Isaac Kook)
About the Author

educator and a leading teacher of Tanakh in North America. Rabbi Etshalom
resides in Southern California with his wife and five children, where he
teaches adults, high school students, and many of all ages via the Internet.
Praise for Between the Lines of the Bible: Exodus
"Addressing the perceived gap between academia and tradition,
Rabbi Etshalom successfully presents an argument for integrating
discoveries from the disciplined worlds of archaeology, philology,
anthropology and literary analysis into the passionate world of
religious study of the Bible. The methodology he teaches in this
volume is representative of the latest and best of the revival of serious
Tanakh study – and gives us much more to anticipate in the future."
–Dr. Yoel Elitzur, Hebrew University
"In the second volume of Between the Lines of the Bible, Rabbi Yitzchak
Etshalom examines the sacred stories of Shemot through his nuanced
understanding of the Torah’s timeless teachings, and brings its insights
to the world. As one of the Jewish community’s most respected and
gifted educators, Rabbi Etshalom brings his vast experience inside
and outside the classroom to life through his words and wisdom."
–Richard M. Joel, President and Bravmann Family University Professor,
Yeshiva University
